Have you ever tried to contemplate infinity? The Big Bang theory postulates that everything began with a singularity. It all exploded from there. Based on that and the fact that the universe is expanding, it was thought that the rate of expansion should be slowing and that inevitably the whole thing would begin to collapse back to a single point.
